My favorite comic series of 2010 has been Nick Spencer’s Morning Glories:

Morning Glory Academy is one of the most prestigious prep schools in the country. But behind its hallowed doors, something sinister and deadly lurks. When six brilliant but troubled new students arrive, they find themselves trapped and desperately seeking answers in a place where nothing is what it seems to be!

Shadowline and Image have announced a double dip discount for the series. The trade paperback, collecting the first six issues will be released on February 16, 2011 at the affordable introductory price of $9.99. A week later, Morning Glories #7 will ship and drops the cover price from $3.50 to $2.99. According to Spencer, “Issue 7 starts a new story arc, making it the perfect jumping-on point for new fans.”

The new animated Young Justice series premieres on Cartoon Network on November 26 at 7 PM Eastern with a one hour episode. Check out the six minute preview at MTV’s Splash Page, where you can see the classic teams of Batman and Robin, Green Arrow and Speedy, and Flash and Kid Flash in action. The preview looks more like the various Bruce Tim and Paul Dini DC animated series than Teen Titans, but I’m just happy to see DC super teams on the screen again.

Unfortunately, it looks like my home state of Iowa is getting snubbed. I’m sure the guys at Mayhem in Ames or Daydreams in Iowa City would be thrilled to be part of it. Green Lantern: First Flight Clip from UGO

Warner Brothers has given UGO two minutes of footage from the upcoming DVD release Green Lantern: First Flight. DC has been cranking out awesome DVD animated features for a couple of years now, and GL looks no different. The DVD will be released on Tuesday, July 28 on DVD (Single-Disc and Two-Disc Special Edition), Blu-ray and Video on Demand.

Geoff Johns to Bring JSA to Smallville

During today’s Smallville panel at Comic Con, Geoff Johns was announced to be writing another episode of the long-running series, this time featuring comics’ original super hero team, the Justice Society of America. When the Smallville producers approached Johns to pen another episode after writing last season’s Legion of Super-Heroes appearance, he agreed… but only if he could incorporate another DC property that had been on the screen before.

It will be interesting to see how the JSA appearance works. In Smallville, we generally accept that super heroes are new to the world, while the JSA’s roots stretch back to the dawn of World War II. Did the group operate in secret? Are they from a parallel Earth?

Who will make up this JSA? Johns only said, “I can not to tell you that yet. But I can tell you there might be a character or two that you won’t expect.” My picks are:

Hawkman: One of the most iconic members of the JSA, who would provide further inspiration for Clark to finally fly.
Flash: Actually, this is a maybe, since they already have a recurring speedster in Kyle Gallner’s Impulse. But then again, the JSA is a generational story, so this might fit.
Sandman: The original, gas-mask and green suit. A naturally noir character that would provide that 1940′s atmosphere.
Stargirl: A fan favorite, a Johns favorite, and one of my favorites. I’d love to see her in live-action.

Jonah Hex Revealed

Details on the upcoming Jonah Hex film emerged from Comic Con, including the first look at the movie poster shown above. Described as “spaghetti western meets zombie thriller,” the film will star Josh Brolin and Meghan Fox. Reports say that the movie doesn’t explore the origin of Hex’s trademark scar, but the story does play with it throughout, as the cowboy threatens to demonstrate on another cowboy just how he got it.

Fox plays a major part in the film, acting as love interest and cheesecake, as she is seen in an old west style corset and getting nekkid with Jonah in another scene. Meanwhile, the starlet was all about the Con, amping up her geek cred, discussing her love of comic stars like Fathom, Danger Girl and Witchblade, while looking for Gen-13 swag. I can’t help but get the sense that Meg’s doing a little job hunting. God knows that I’ve passed my resume around at cons a time or two.

Stan Lee to Appear in Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2

The legendary Stan Lee has put in cameos in most of Marvel’s movies, but now he’s joining the voice cast of Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2. Stan’s narrated a couple of games from the Spider-Man series, but this will be the first time he’s actually had an in-game part. According to Lee:

“I am thrilled to be making my first onscreen videogame cameo in Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 2. It’s such a kick to see characters that I’ve helped create come to life in the game and now I’m a part of the Marvel videogame universe!”

I can’t wait to see Lee interact with Super Heroes doing their thing in his humble yet bombastic way. Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 ships on September 15 for Xbox 360, PS3, PS2, Wii, DS and PSP.

DC Comics and Warner on Future Movie Plans

The Hollywood Reporter ran a piece that detailed DC Comics’ and Warner Brothers plans for future film adaptations coming from the DC library.

So what’s in the works, and how is DC prepared to compete with Marvel’s domination of the box office? Some of the projects already in development are:

Green Lantern, which announced last week that Ryan Reynolds would star.
The Losers, an action adventure tale about an emotionally scarred Special Forces group, starring Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Zoe Saldana and Chris Evans, starts shooting this week.
Jonah Hex, starring Josh Brolin, Megan Fox and John Malkovich, wrapped production recently.
The Human Target television series will premiere this fall on FOX.

Comics writers Marv Wolfman, Geoff Johns and Grant Morrison are serving as story consultants for some other projects, the only one of which has been identified was The Flash, with a new treatment of the script being produced by Johns. Other projects include Bizarro, Green Arrow and Aquaman – all of which I want to see, but does anyone whose not a comics geek want that? I also want to see a live-action/CGI adaptation of Angel and the Ape, but I don’t recommend anyone actually make it.

The HR article is vague about the future of Superman, citing the lukewarm performance of Superman Returns. However, the court recently ruled that if Warner Brothers didn’t begin production on a new Superman film by 2011, the heirs of the creators’ estates could sue for damages.

I’ve always been a little confused at DC’s (general) lack of success at the movies over the past 20 years. Marvel, which was an unmitigated trainwreck of a company in the 90s came into 2000 kicking ass with the X-Men and Spider-Man franchises, topping it off with last year’s epics Iron Man and the Incredible Hulk. Attaching talent that knows the comics was a good move, but I wonder what would happen if they got Bruce Timm and his team, the people who have made DC animation an incredible plate of awesome, involved.
