Sam Raimi to Direct World of Warcraft Movie

Sam Raimi has signed on to direct a live-action adaptation of World of Warcraft. There’s a lot of talk out of the blogs about the wisdom of this teaming. Pajiba compares this announcement to shit fajitas: fajitas (Sam Raimi movies) are awesome, but their, you know, full of shit (i.e. video game movies traditionally suck). MTV, on the other hand, seems to fear an Uwe Boll-quality outing.

Personally, I think that the movie will have legs. With 11+ million subscribers after almost 5 years, a strong opening weekend is virtually guaranteed, and Sam Raimi is one of the few directors out there who could manage the game’s blend of camp and drama. Raimi will enter pre-production on the film while shooting Spider-Man 4, which means we can probably expect a 2011 or later release date.
