I’ve always believed that if Star Trek: The Next Generation came out after the Internet had penetrated every home in America, they would have rethought the holodeck concept. First off, the net drove home the fact that the earliest adopter of new media is always the porn industry. Just imagine 24th century dating post-holodeck. Would there be a point? Would anyone play out the whole scenario, from picking their date up, going to the restaurant, movie, beach, what have you, and doing the traditional woo? I’d also assume that holodecks have parental control, meaning that future kids would have to figure out how to maximize their puberty just like I did: sneak in a Skinemax movie whenever the parents weren’t home.
